Region III Week 4 Upset of the Week: West (4-0) defeated #9 Mexia (4-1), 28-27

Region III Week 4 Game of the Week: Cameron Yoe @ Rockdale (Battle of the Bell).... #17 Rockdale defeated Cameron, 41-21

Other week 4 games of Interest:

2A #1 Daingerfield (4-0) @ 3A #1 Gilmer (4-0)… A rare “one vs. one” meeting between two perennial state powers. Returning 2A state champs Daingerfield have a lot going for them. Last year, life was good. The Tigers lost only one game during their run to the 2A Division II title. Impressive 2008 regular season wins over Omaha Paul Pewitt and then-second-ranked Celina foreshadowed their dominating run through district play and the playoffs. Between Daingerfield's first district game and the title game, only Newton was able to come within three touchdowns of the Tigers. The 2009 season has been just as good. They brought back six starters to each side of the ball, three of which were 2008 All-State selections. They’re undefeated so far, including another pair of wins against Paul Pewitt and 3A state-ranked Celina. The lone blemish since last season? A 49-18 mauling at the hands of the Gilmer Buckeyes a year ago this week. In a week of huge games across the state and across classifications, this matchup has earned it’s spot as one of the most anticipated...#1 Gilmer defeated 2A #1 Daingerfield, 43-20

AP #2 Carthage Bulldogs (4-0) @ 4A Jacksonville (3-1)… “Game of the Week” material during an average week. Defending 3A state champs Carthage have taken down three 4A playoff contenders en route to their undefeated record. Jacksonville has taken out the likes of Marshall, Hallsville, and Palestine to get to this point and aren’t strangers to dogfights, with two of those wins (Marshall and Palestine) coming down to overtime. Has all the makings of a great game.... 3ADL #5 Carthage defeated 4A Jacksonville, 21-17

Bryan Rudder (2-1) @ AP #5 Navasota (4-0) 24-3A DISTRICT OPENER… Second-year program Rudder has made some nice strides this year. After beginning the year with a loss to then-#24 Cleveland, they followed up their first win in program history (against Brookshire-Royal) with another one the following week, blowing out Hearne to earn the program’s first winning streak. They continue to improve on a weekly basis and take their two-game winning streak to Navasota this week to play the heavily-favored Rattlers in their first test in district play... 3ADL #6 Navasota defeated Bryan Rudder, 41-14

Huffman-Hargrave (2-2) @ Coldspring-Oakhurst (3-1) 22-3A DISTRICT OPENER… Huffman played three 4A schools to open up their season before finishing non-district play with a 41-14 blowout of Hamshire-Fannett. Meanwhile, Coldspring’s only loss came at the hands of perennial 2A power Corrigan-Camden. The District 22 race opens with a matchup of two of the early frontrunners in the 22-3A race... Coldspring-Oakhurst defeated Huffman-Hargrave, 42-14

Orangefield (3-1) @ 2A #6 Newton (4-0)… 2A powerhouse Newton barely got out of Silsbee (1-3) last week with the “W,” but have been impressive otherwise. Orangefield, meanwhile, has quietly put together a nice season behind a good corps of returning veterans. The Bobcats’ one-win 2008 season that was punctuated by a devastating blow from Hurricane Ike now seems like a distant memory. This year’s squad only has a one-TD loss to East Chambers on its record. However, Newton beat that same East Chambers team by a 32-7 mark the week following Orangefield’s loss. Though Newton comes in as heavy favorites, you can bet the Bobcats have a huge red circle on this week as a measuring stick to see if they’ve come far enough to play with, and beat, the big boys... 2A #6 Newton (5-0) defeated Orangefield (3-2), 63-40

4A Kilgore (1-3) @ 3ADL #23 Palestine (2-2)… Palestine’s two losses have come at the hands of fifth-ranked Navasota (by eight) and 4A playoff contender Jacksonville (by three in overtime). Kilgore’s three losses have come against 4A power Marshall, defending 3A state champs Carthage, and top-ranked Gilmer. Palestine comes in as the favorite, but Kilgore isn’t a team to sleep on... 4A Kilgore (2-3) defeated 3ADL #23 Palestine (2-3), 38-24

Waco LaVega (2-2) @ Crockett (0-4)… Crockett may be the best winless team in the state. If you take away their 45-21 loss against state-ranked Mexia, the Bulldogs have been outscored by a mere 14 points in their three other losses. LaVega’s only losses have been to 3A powers Brownwood and Abilene Wylie. They come in as the favorite, but Crockett has a great chance to change my claim in the first sentence to “maybe the best one-loss team in the state”……… if they can pull off a win against the visiting Pirates... Waco LaVega (3-2) defeated Crockett (0-5), 42-0

Region 3 Undefeated Teams:
#1 Gilmer (4-0)... Last week W vs. 4A Kilgore, 70-27
#5 Carthage (4-0)... Last week W vs. (4A) Nacogdoches
#9 Navasota (4-0)... Last week W vs. 3A #8 Bellville, 24-14
#10 Mexia (4-0)... Last week W vs. Athens, 61-22
#12 Rockdale (4-0)... Last week W vs. Leander Rouse, 54-0
Brownsboro (3-0)... Last week W vs. Wills Point, 28-15

Teams that fell from the ranks of the undefeated during Week 3:
#4 West Orange-Stark (3-1)... Last week L vs. Jasper, 13-23
#24 Cleveland (3-1)... Last week L vs. (4A) Little Cypress-Mauriceville, 33-36
Taylor (3-1)... Last week L vs. Llano, 13-30
